A Challenge From a Teacher
By Larry Chadwick
In Memory of my daughter Ginger Michelle

L.L. Bean wasn’t really her style. But then again that hat. She had to have that hat. It would work so perfect with her classroom. So she sat down at her computer and proceeded to write a whole sequence of topic titles. Relying on her kindergarten experience she got her scissors out and separated each title into a single paper strip. When they were folded in half they went into her hat. And the hat went to her high school English classroom. It would do her juniors and seniors good to write impromptu papers on random topics.

The following is my challenge to you:

I have started on this challenge and intend to write them all. But my challenge to you is to take one of your choosing and for a few minutes be a high school student again. Prose or poetry your choosing.

Assignments From My Daughter
Ginger Michelle Chadwick

1. Flattery Versus Praise
2. If I Could Meet A Star
3. Words Don’t Always Mean What They Say
4. Where My Money Goes
5. Keeping Peace
6. Making Our Highways Safe
7. The Influence of Motion Pictures
8. Get Rich Quick
9. Vacation USA
10. Today’s Music
11. Gold Is Where You Find It
12. Proper Clothes for The Young Adult
13. Living Cheaply But Well
14. Honesty In Advertising
15. I Predict…
16. Good Bye, High School
17. I Don’t Want To Be Rich
18. My Hero
19. I Was So Embarrassed!
20. If I Could Write A Column
21. Prom Etiquette
22. That’s Not Funny
23. Just Say “No!”
24. Never Say “No!”
25. How To Get What You Want
26. My Best Friend
27. You Can’t Choose Your Relatives
28. The Most Important Invention Of Our Time
29. Improving Government

Yes, Larry.  I'll join you here in the classroom, or sit in the corner wondering why I didn't...

Your daughter is so proud of you!

kaile,
Thanks. You're a great guy! I know you turned your work in early...

KristieSue,
I'm looking forward to the results! Thanks.

Karilea,
I'm eager to see what gets turned in. It may seem odd, but this took a fair amount of courage to post. Thank you I needed that.

Rhonda,
Cool! I can hardly wait! Thanks.

Kielo,
Perfect...I'll be watching. Thanks!

I can assure you it's indoor plumbing!
Some day I'll have to write about outhouses and the annual Outhouse races in Alaska.
I'm not kidding!

Larry, thank you.  All parts, I-V, are now done, and perhaps a column was formed.  I don't know.  I will leave that to you...and I hope you don't mind, but this wrote itself, or perhaps your daughter sat with me, and wrote it for me...

all I know, is that for now, I will only complete this one challenge.  It felt right, and I thank you for allowing me to continue a "father/daughter" dance...

and I hope it brought something to you.  I know it did for me.  Now, I am tired, and will not write any more on this particular subject, but did want to thank you, for adding a stick to the fire, and for watching the embers go high...

and now I must go finish my other project...yes, that one...

it's time.

Larry, this is really great. It's like everyone who accepts your challenge is writing a tribute to your wonderful daughter.

No, I didn't know her personally, but from what I've read about her from you and the others, she sounded like a really wonderful person on the inside and out.

I will try to write something. I don't promise on challenges because I never know how they will turn out.

This is really touching to me, dear friend.

Heart Hugs,
Ethel

Karilea,
Indeed this meant much to me. And it seems there is an element of Ginger in it. It was moving that it dealt, in large part, with a phase of life to which we never arrived. A column if ever there was one. Thank you so much for participating in this challenge. I have been richly blessed for it.

Ethel,
No commitments required. It is so meaningful that anyone has an interest in this project. And thank you for such kind words. It is much appreciated.

Hi Larry, thanks for your daughter's challenge. Remember I wrote you a poem back then that I will see her spirit in every sunrise? I often think about her when I'm driving to work while the sun is rising and I always say 'Hello Ginger, you've brought me beauty again this morning'.

I'm going to try to do each one.

Thanks, Titia

Ya' know dear friend your timing is impeccable as usual. Just yesterday I was cleaning out my email account and stumbled accross my last email from her entitled "My Favorite Dad". It brought my mind to a screeching halt. I printed it out and pondered on it for some time. How I miss my baby. She would be 30 now. I'm rambling on to say "YES"!

And a big THANK YOU.

Just for fun...a rubbish poem from me...

chosen question : 17. I Don’t Want To Be Rich

I crossed thousands of rules today,
just by walking down the road.
I smelled the scent of codes installed for centuries
and I continued, watching the beautiful gardens and austere windows, empty as always.

Hi Larry C.
Well, well, well, well.....that is a deep subject. :-)
I especially liked your challenge and I hungered for yours. I went back and read to #9 of your challenges. I feel I know more of a heart, a father and daughter! :-)
I must confess #9 had my tongue tasting salt and again I thirst for #10. So may I encourage you to feed me!
Just a quickie that came to my mind:

A Father Paints
*
Sitting at eye level
resting on elbows
*
fitting on a cushion
waiting, beginning to feel
*
the painter loves, all ways
touching every place
*
he can paint.
*
Please continue to keep on keeping on!
