The Letter – the Maid – Part 10

In all the years her Lady shed tears so
and for all of those letters sent
her Maid with the strictest of morals
kept counsel, as was her bent

                        never had she assessed once
                        nor questioned her Lady’s ways
but the quiet that stole o’er her Lady
made her more than a little afraid

one day Maid took matters upon her
                        and warily made her way
                        to her Lady’s chambers
                        on a storming, wicked day

her Lady had gone that morning
to Church for her son to pray
the Maid turned the key of burled box
made its holdings give up its say

                        letters were bound in ribbon
                        tear-stained, she touched each one
                        slowly untied as if bidden
to read each, leaving none undone

hours passed under the Maid’s perusal
                        her tears fell many, unchecked
                        how brave her Lady’s refusal
and why she watched for ship’s deck

each night as she scanned the horizon
each morn as she dressed by the sill
for if love by sheer force could keep him alive
he’d return by her great sense of will

for she continued to send her letters
a copy of each she had made
for the day her son was much older
a dowry of love she had saved

                        the earliest letters from him
had carried the news of great lands
still tinged with the fragrance of spices
his news was vibrant and grand

“Dear Lady, my love, my life’s blood
‘tis true what the mariners say
there is land here for the taking
and the sights take my breath away,

while rich, I know greater pleasures
lie on home’s ground, I’ll be back soon
for want of you and your treasures
watch for me by light of the moon

we’ll bring our son to these great lands
have more children and you shall see
O Lady, my love, my Dear Heart
as you mean all the world to me…”

blue ribbon had kept safe her copies
pink ribbons, her letters from him
as if each were a gathering of trophies
as she read, her eyes filled to brim,

“My love, I’ve missed you verily so,
these many days that go by
but in your quest is my believe
and that you have reasons why

you’ve not come home to me yet
                        your duties beckon you so
so fill me not with any regret
but I shall watch for you; just know

your son grows in daily splendor
his countenance is a mirror of you
he looks for his father, daily
and speaks of your heart, so true

‘tis true, I miss you, my darling
but will weather the wait, for thee,
for soon you’ll come to the harbor
and this love in my face, you’ll see.”

Many’s the day that flew by
                        and many seemed heaven bent
that the Maid saw the Lady waiting
speaking of doves that God lent

the Maid thought her Lady a bit giddy
perhaps the grief took it’s toll
never caught sight of the writings
Lady wrapped to Dove’s legs on her strolls

nor did she see her Lady leaving
to let the Dove take to its’ wing
                        she only saw the grieving
and knew not how she lessened its’ sting

but now she came to full realize
the course that her Lady had set
then prayed to God that her lady
would soon have her prayers full met.

Ah hah! Now you realize this should be a movie don't you?  I am sitting in the front row with my popcorn, kleenix and my heart is swollen.  This is just a beautifully woven story.  I LOVE IT!

dear Lady - Thjose por doves are trying to save her - that's why I hate kitties - all those wretched cats wanna do is eat the doves and thereby destroy her chances of finding her Long John...er... her hero.

You are doing splendidly with this story.  Please keep it up.

Oh Lady~I want him to return to his true love, but, alas I don't really want this tale to end.  'Excellent' is putting this very mildly.  ~Nancy~
