                                  The Letter

It came, edged in black, a missive,
and for some time, it simply lay
in her lap, quietly, a message of
                                  passing, a time of grief,

the chore of opening it with the
bone knife too burdensome, just yet,
too terrible the knowledge it held,
she was not ready to take it in to her
heart, as she had taken him in,

her fingers lay on the parchment,
                                  stroking the ink’s lines,
                                  falling to her velvet skirt,
                                  picking at memories
                                  now engulfed by great loss,
                                  drowned by inner tears
                                  the salt’s stinging clench
                                  strangling all sound.

                                  She would open the letter
                                  but not now.

Dear Lady in White, this is a very emotional read, one that brings pictures to the mind of grieving, of loss and the building of courage. The strength slowly growing as etchings of the written words, with power of mind consumption, consume. The letter seems to hold both memories of love and future tears of grieving. We all seem to rely on time to make things right and ease the hurt.

Great work, loved it.

Sincerely
Rick

Lady..Lady...
you MUST keep this one going...
this could only be part one........
we must have more ........

When your own emptiness is all that's getting through
There comes a point when you're not sure why you're still talking
I passed that point long ago

Nicely done...what came to my mind were the thousands of letters like this one that wives, fathers and mothers received during world war two...how hard that letter would've been to open, because opening it would've confirmed what the loved one had alread suspected all along.  Anyway, this is how I perceived this piece.

Thanks to Michael's 'bump', I read this one that I had previously missed. How sad, yet there is a sense of acceptance that there will be more steps for her to take, if only in memory.

Just a perfect depiction of how any mother or wife would feel when getting such a letter from, for example, the Department of Defense.  Or, during WWII, the War Department.

Just a beautifully written piece

Ah - the introduction to a tale of grief, and perhaps release?  I like the flow and development.

Painfully beautiful. She sits with her bittersweet memories while tears fill her eyes. *sigh* what an incredible poem.

Love I leave with you whether it is in your life now or yet the essense of your dreams.
