5673 Circles of Fortitude 04 September 2006 An empty horizon, a new moon Old love or new to ponder this avenue of fortitude where unto a mind to wander For where was she or was that found An even smaller circle in its way of reversing round With fate and fantasy a wayward path of guilt This to love, those windmills to tilt Heaven or lower down heights toward compassion Those days of eventide where words and mediocrity were another day to endure Tilting is jousting. Where the phrase ‘Tilting at windmills’ is considered to be derived in relation to tale of Don Quixote (first published in 1604, under the title: El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha [The Ingenious Knight of La Mancha]), a novel by the Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. In recounting the fictional and fantasy exploits of would-be knight ‘Don Quixote’ and his loyal servant Sancho Panza who proposed to fight injustice through chivalry. The book: Don Quixote (in its archaic spelling of the title) is considered to be one of the major literary masterpieces and ranks as a best seller in numerous translations. With the book also deriving the adjective ‘quixotic’ (striving for visionary ideals), the eponymous hero imagines himself to be fighting giants when he attacks windmills. However it was not until as late as 1937 that the actual phrase is recorded in print, to be present in the Agatha Christie novel: ‘Death on Nile’ as the words: “Rather eccentric - inclined to tilt at windmills.” © 2006 Christopher W Herbert (a New Zealand Poet) a poet who cares |

as one person said to me about my writing. "although you may never get the chance to see their eyes and look deep into their souls, you reach their heart and minds with your thoughtful wonderful psalms. There are many people who never get a chance...who are afraid of words and how others will perceive them." and for just that, I write on , even if I do not get that kind of feedback every day a poet who cares |
