Sundown on Gray Stones

Tears burn like cheap whiskey,
spill down gullies
in his washed-leather cheeks.

The soft pink priest
murmurs marshmallow words
he can’t make out.

His ears are full of her whisper,
“I’ll never leave you.”

After fifty-three years
it hurts to know
she lied.

Nan,

I knew when I saw your name, this would be perfection, and it is.  I love how you paint mood, letter by letter, and so few of them.  Such bitter after-taste life sometimes give. I feel the hurt evoked by your poem.  Masterfully written.

.....sigh.....remembering my father-in-law, who died one day, but kept living for a decade. Thank you for bringing me such a soft and wistful memory for this foggy day.

Oh my, the loss of one's mate after 53 years!
Tenderly written, dear poet Nan.
Far beyond poignant, this reaches deeply into my heart. Peaceful wishes offered.
