A TIME AGO

a time ago

I could hear
the sound
light made
as it bounced
off a mirror

I could feel
birdsong
tremble
the air
and wrinkle
the lake

with my hand
on my bedroom
wall
I could feel
the heat
of my parents'
passion
two rooms away

but I was taught
the evil
of such perceptions
and learned
to fear
their presence
as much
as I now fear
their absence
