gaunt morning light
lady dresses in silence and rile
takes herself to shakerag
see yellow eye lwa woman
head in brown rag
make root work

yellow eye woman
shakes head
points stick finger
bone is still covered
take this
passes something
lady tucks bag in private place

wandering by bayou
pissau lis
growin’ yellow
zirondelle floating over water
delicate
long legged ibis
dipping for food
at water’s edge
‘gator slippin’ up
sudden feathers
ibis gone

lady thinkin’
we different
ja’i gros couer
I got heart
pretty feathers
charcoal man got gumbo
like ‘gator

gris gris I slipped
to his tongue
before
caught my heart
while his tiptoes from the house
finds giggles
red purple skirts
fetchin’ faces

lady sighs
half moon fingers
slide bag into water

You are hitting me hard here.  I see myself in both Charcoal Man and his Lady -- maybe we all do.  Maybe it's like the two masks -- they make me smile.  They make me laugh.  And, they make me bawl my eyes out.

Yano, Kate....I very, very rarely buy poetry because you can find so much for free.  But have to tell you, honestly.....I would spend money on this series.

I believe, Kate, that you should publish these poems.  I'd buy the book, treasure it and wear it out reading it.  Please?

I wonder if she got him, if she would want him.  He wouldn't be the man she loves.
