The Heroine Back Home

She sits alone, her thoughts astray,
A vision in a shuttered room.
Where sunlight filters in to dance
With dust motes that escaped the broom.
She hugs her knees and tries to pray,
But tears invade her silent pleas.
And when she prays for some small chance
The stinging tears fall on her knees.

Her prayer is small as matters go,
And from the world she hides her fear.
She puts a brave smile on her face
When parents call or friends appear.
In fact, it's such a perfect show,
That no one knows how hard she tries
To keep her pretty smile in place,
And shield her loved ones from her cries.

She lives for when her email shows
Her "Inbox" has mail from her man,
You'll often see her smile through tears;
She'll read--and re-read when she can.
But when her phone rings, off she goes!
The answer, "Why?" is one of choice,
As every extra ring she hears
Might waste a chance to hear his voice.

So, what from God is all she asks?
This pretty girl needs just one thing;
Her hero marching home from war--
The one she promised with a ring.
And so she bears her lonely tasks
--She cleans her house and makes her bed--
And thanks the Lord for every chore
That blunts the sharp thoughts in her head.

Then one fine day will soon arrive;
That one proud time for which she aches,
When on the tarmac heroes stand
As hearts beat fast, and love awakes.
But this sweet girl will come alive
For only one man in the crowd.
And then the dreams she hoped and planned
Will let her shout her love aloud.

Strong arms will hug her short of breath,
But she hugs back almost as strong!
And burning kisses light her heart
That smoldered low for far too long.
Now banished, no more thoughts of death
Intruded on her blissful mind.
Forevermore is where they'll start
As love and joy are theirs to find.

I enjoyed the write!

My mother wrote a similar themed poem titled: War, A Mother's Perspective.

"How true--They too serve
Who only stand and wait."

Hi, Pressie.

Thanks for the nice comments.  I just thought that it was time to remember all of the women, including my mom, who sit patiently and wait, and worry, and try to put on a brave face, when inside they want to scream and cry.  I know and appreciate some of what they have been, and do, go through.

Too true:

"How true--They too serve
Who only stand and wait."

Hi, TL.

I'm so sorry.  I just saw this post, today.  Also, I'm sorry to hear about your grandson.  Tell him God speed for me, and as the Spanish say so eloquently: "Vaya con Dios."

Love, John
