![]() I walked the path of poppies red and felt my heart turn in my chest When I came there where they had lived The soldiers who just fought their best I crawled where they had crawled before When trying hard to hide their fears I saw the place where they had slept The soil still drained from shedded tears I felt the cold of winter's snow Penetrate my sleeveless shirt When I was told they had no coat To keep them warm in this war's dirt I looked at pictures of flooded land Long planking for arms and food supply I turned my head and saw green meadows And heard the screams of soldiers die I touched the stones that they sat on To have a smoke or just a rest And in this silence my heart was crying For soldiers who just fought their best ~~~~~ The 1914-1918 IJzer line in Diksmuide, Belgium is not too far from where I live in The Netherlands and a few years ago I visited the reconstruction museum. It was quite impressing and rather depressing when I tried to imagine how life must've been for these soldiers, but I didn't even come close to the reality of those days. The photo's I collected from different informative websites. Like scattered leaves...my words will flow |

TitiaGal~ You rolled up your sleeves and found 'voice' to tell this poignant story~ I so enjoy the history that goes along with the perfected poetry of this piece~ This is very, very good, my friend~ ![]() The pictures are stirring~ *Huglets* ![]() ~*Marge*~ ~*The sound of a kiss is not as strong as that of a cannon, but it's echo endures much longer*~ |
