The Angler’s Mitten

Ruthless, to be aptly named
A toothless renegade
That tortured many fishermen
In sunset serenade
Broad-chested as the boat went out
Be crew or solitaire
Returned a putty face in pout
Dead eyes in pointless stare

The elder stood the banks so bold
Observing such a scene
Quite often teased the tales he told
How Ruthless got so mean
It’s said the Elder took the lot
Of all the school to task
Left Ruthless orphaned all alone
His daddy taken last

And it appeared some truth to that
For Ruthless earned his keep
The toothless renegade himself
Slipped lines and headed deep
And any chance to overboard
Unwitting fishermen
That Ruthless toothless devil
Would dump ‘em in to swim

The day then came in winter white
The Elder launched his scow
Dressed warm in layers over coat
One mitten on the bow
And every man had questioned that
To see this strange display
The Elder chuckled to himself
Kept mum, he went his way

And hours passed to sunset came
Along the strike of five
Then sure enough his ship came in
The Elder still alive
Soaked to the skin and shivering
So proud he did display
That Ruthless toothless demon
Upon his deck did lay

Though never was the story told
Of how that fish got caught
And stem to stern the masses polled
To find out what they sought
Was all the same upon the scow
Not one thing out of place
Except for that dang mitten now
Was gone without a trace

For years they murmured up and down
The Elder’s secrets kept
The taxidermist covered up
The answers we suspect
So many times a reckless wish
To figure out the way
The Elder caught that Ruthless fish
In secret on that day

Though we suspect it correlates
To wintry gusts and tears
Perhaps the man apologized
A blow hard, all those years

I love it!
