Were feathered friends
kept in jail
for aviary trials
for binocular views?
did one accept favors
from younger parrots
when art looked caged
as seed eaters hopped
perch to waterspout,
then toothless
there was a flutter
a bird was released.

But if tables turned
were men in cages
examined by dove eyes,
and warm breasts
shed feathers
for money
gifts
lavished trinkets
whose hand would enter
barred retreats
who would fly
from locked enclosures
away to distant suns?

Turn of century
turn of the key
twist of a fate
never set free
paid for
cage exhibits
solicitous
of retinal views
aviary reviews
accepted favors
a chirp turned to
a tweet
winged bodies
hopped
flights froze
clipped from the skies.

Fly or grounded
described in letters
an exhibit or flop
written for select friends
gratitude for a dinner
accompanied by a song
in a cage
muted to silence
the captive slept..
once it flew
now it flops
hops from perch
to waterspout
toothless.
