Oh! To Be A Dude

Godspeed you emotionless men
"fellas" and "guys" that take a woman
and fill her up with excitement
so that she'll never want again
(this is a faux feeling all around;
pass 'er around like a doobie
see if she appreciates this)
Touchdown!
Voila, I'm 12 yards away from
my hands all over her

(High Five!)

Yes, right on, you little-heart men
take all you need for the female frame
and build yourself a statue out of phone numbers
crumpled in the ashtrays
you've got it right (...to be so wrong)

I need this tonight
so I deposit my soul
into girlfriends I haven't seen in years
take the bus to the streets of giggling redheads
and flashy blondes
and menacing brunettes
there I am needed, I think
there I am not wanted, I figure
I figure I know
'cause oh to be a dude
to walk the line 'tween love and lust
and fall at the end on the side of
neither of the above
eventually
a laugh with the "fellas"
and I'm couning up my Y chromosones
1,2,3,4...gimme s'more

I lie to myself every night it seems
I lie awake and scream in my mind,
DAMMIT
why's it such an awful thing
to worship the shadow of a footstep
she left behind
Seems I'm always here
on the ground with a magnifying glass
looking for traces of her graces
to take home and decorate my fantasies
come on now,
is this romantic recklessness
so unhealthy for me after all?
ah, but the fairer sex
is the center to my hurricane being
twsting 'round the bend
automatically single
but looking for fragile smiles
making eyes at pretty actresses
and talented singers
what the hell is my problem?
Honestly!

OH! To be a dude
so much easier to shrivel my heart
and dive into the cliche "maleness"
complete with Tim Allen grunts
and a strange love & dislike for women
yeah, such a boring Sunday afternoon
to be leering at plastic women
and pound my chest like an ape
before the monolith in 2001
now it's 2006: A Male Oddity
I freely admit
and hide my sensitive Jackson Browne albums
under my matress
a sketch of a nice romantic guy
I've not the guts to completely abandon
it's got to make sense someday
right?
Please, right?

Oh to remain a matured man
hard-won luck of the draw
to listen to every word she says
and sing songs to her
and see this is where I belong
damn hard
but I'm lonelier than I'll ever admit
so I figure I'll postpone my trip to dudesville
and devote myself to the woman (never) coming up the road
to be with me
(after all, this is why I write shattering songs such as these, right?
for the chicks...oh, and for the health of my soul, but like that matters)
aw poor little me...
aw poor little male...
he's lost himself in cries of Viva La Femme!

Godspeed you emotional man.

In “ The Snows of Kilimanjaro”
the main character reflects, as he’s dying, on the fact
that he had had more success with women
once he no longer meant what he said.

I'm not sure what to say to this one, so I guess I will just process with my mouth open!  The fairer sex can certainly be just as shallow, so I hope like attracts like to some degree.  At least that way, water will seek it's own level and we draw what we deserve.   I understood the lament in this thought...like the old adage, 'nice guys finish last.'  Even that can be read two ways, however.  Maybe finishing last is best.  To worship the ground she walks on, tho, with a magnifying glass to the shadow of a footprint, you're gonna have to be half bloodhound. Sooner or later, you'll find out the shadows left were still made by feet of clay, but I hope you find the heart of an angel!

You have me thinking! (like I know anything!)

Oh yeah!  Maybe you should put those Jackson Browne recordings on display!

Well, I'm not really sure where you are going with this poem.  At the beginning, being a lady, I took offense to the way you were talking about passing her around.  Then at the end you talk about being in love with one woman.  So I am not sure what meaning you are trying to get across.  Definitely a thought provoking poem, just not sure what it means.

This is GREAT!

...but I think you have forgotten the first lesson in "The Dude's Handbook,"  "The fair sex is never fair, so never share your feelings; keep 'em guessing."

When my youngest son was about four years old, he came up to me with a serious face and explained to me in hushed tones that there are two kinds of people: huggers and dudes.  The interesting thing (to me) was the lines between these two groups in his reflections were not strictly drawn by gender.  He categorized some males as huggers and some females as dudes...and with a more adult perspective (and access to more private information) I have to say he was gifted with an uncanny accuracy.
