The Past Is Haunting

May 18, 1906

quote:
This morning, Mayor Shields received word that there was a case of destitution in the North part of the city which needed attention at once. Upon making an investigation, he  discovered that a woman living on West Lincoln, who has been on city charity roll for months, gave birth to a babe last night, and that there was not a garment in the house to clothe the child. The woman has three other children which the city has been caring for, for some months. Mayor Shields spent a part of the morning trying to get clothing for the child, but at noon had been unsuccessful. The woman’s oldest boy was sent to the reform school a short time ago, and the other children will probably be sent to the orphans’ home as soon as arrangements can be made for their admission.
Salina Journal

One hundred years
and what has changed,
to those the lives
which were re-arranged
to fit some need, fulfill
some bill, and nothing was
so evil, still,
to rip a family
from a mother’s arms.

Who knew her story,
and who fathered the babe?
No mention of he, but the
life he gave, bare and stark,
this mother’s child,
not to mention those gone
wild, possibly resorting to
the “borrowing needs”,
of bread or apple,
that the others be fed,
and now the eldest was
to reform school led.

Orphans, the babies, yet
mother’s still here, is she
crying, or drugged?
What more don’t we know?
Only that hearts torn in torment,
give face to some past,
no names to explore,
but oh! the vision they’ve cast.

I am afraid that this type of heartbreaking story is being played out just about everywhere. 'Suffer the little children'
God help them all.

Sunshine, you are the Mother Theresa of Compassion and your smile says your name.  I hope you treat yourself as well as you treat all of us and the rest of the world.  You deserve only the best.  You touch hearts with your words, your actions, your smile and the whole of yourself.  Thank you for being Sunshine.

Insightful and sad but well written...lots of questions..like do we move forward or back in time? The haves will keep what they have with their taxes..the starving shall starve but be welcomed to glory..thank you for this write Karilea...

I have often wondered what the world was like on Saturday, February 19, 1955.
The day of my birth. What was going on in pop culture? What were they reading in the papers? What were the fads and the gossip? Guess I would need a sighted reader to a library to look through old micro-films.
Remember old micro-films?

Unfortunately KJ,  this is too common.  And
such a helpless situation for so many....
Yes, where is the father?  Why isn't he
helping with his family....probably a crack
head or something similar...

Such a sad thing to see,  we are blessed and so many of us don't know it.  Forgive me for missing
the date of the quote...you are right, he might
have died on the plains....life was hard then,
for many!
