Your constructive comments are your gifts to me. Earthen Spans An older earthen span I spied one day Between the old and unaccustomed new And he withheld the new.The newer view Laid challenging claim with an hearty, "Yea!" The older span cried, "Nay, why hear new's bray To question the old?New's from donkey brew And breeds unknown ways!"But in death's adieu The old span stiffly, straightly "stored" away! Who dares the bridging 'tween the new and old And cares to bear weights of the new demand And wears the mantle to break the old mold? Then silence sounded swiftly cross the land For such a living span!Lo and behold, Then volunteers!Where? ... Playing in the sand! |

Dear Passing Shadows, I am very young at writing poetry. When I read your works, I am reading a poet. You have ways of framing thoughts which are beautiful. I am working on this. I chose the sonnet for it seemed to "fit" me. There are professionals who would say that I profane the sonnet form by using it for other than framing the "beautiful." I use it because I like to set the stage, turn it,(lines 9 to 10) and then end with "a cutting edge" thought. Many times I fail, as some of my readers tell me, "We didn't get the point!" This is my fault. "Those playing in the sand, I mean as a new generation comes on the scene and picks up where we leave "off." But then symbolism can be taken many ways. Thanks for reading this. |

Dear Seymour, Thanks for reading this poem. "Who dares the bridging 'tween the new and old ... ." We all stand on the shoulders of past generations and their baton we take and there is no mistake about that. Granddads love to play with his grandson's toys and o what a joy. Again I have failed to make my point and that is a new generation picks up where the old generation leaves "off." Yet, in years of dealing with people, I've learned there are ones who fear the new. But history tells us that also. Look how the auto was first feared by many. As a child, when airplanes first began to really come to the forefront, I remember hearing elderly people say, "If we were meant to fly, we would be born with wings!" lol Thanks. |

Dear Susan, Thank you for reading this work and your kind remarks. I liked what you added for it is the truth! The law of sowing and reaping is a reality. So many do not realize that we sow handfuls and reap bushels. The sad part of sowing is in sowing the bad within our children. I think the scripture says something about the parents' sins influencing the third and fourth generations. Thank you again. May the blessings of heaven rest upon you! |
