In a state of limbo

There once was a man, who toyed with world,
At the top of his game, the envy of all the boys and girls.
He had it all, a house filled with gold,
Looks to kill, he would never grow old.
He manipulated his way up the company ladder,
To the point where humanity never even mattered,
He would get what he wanted, whatever the cost,
He made a deal with the devil, reminiscent of Faust:

“Dear sir, I do say, what a beautiful soul your’s will be to taste,
What do you wish, what do you desire, what can I do to bring you higher?
Is it gold, is it power, is it to reign at the top of the Babel tower?
Do you wish to surpass god in his glory, do wish for your life to be told as a story?
A legend, a martyr, what is it you will barter?”

“For my eternal self I wish for love, not love as in peace, such as that of the dove,
What I wish for is the admiration of my world and my peers,
I wish for my soul to be held entirely dear,
Not by women or by man, individually, I wish to hold the world by its hand,
And through the love of the collective, earn my way to heaven, such are my demands.”

“Earn your way to heaven, my dear boy, why, you need not will such a thing,
For it is already your soul that you bring,
You are doomed, the pact is sealed, and your true nature is revealed,
So as my bargin is fulfilled, so shall yours, be ready,
The world shall bend to your will.”

With this the man would walk down the street,
And was surely the envy of everyone he would meet.
World leaders sought his advice, on every matter, every plan,
To all of human being he could make a demand,
Chased down the street by the people shocked and awed,
It happened in a single moment, humanity was cowed,
To a force as innocuous as a mere mortal,
But his soul was eternal, kept as it was in hells portal.

Soon the world became a place entirely dark and dire,
And so the most evil men could survive to conspire,
In this world all that was good ended up reversed,
So that sin became the norm and life receded into the hearse,
Evil men ran amok, doing what they pleased,
Prayers went unanswered as god receded.
The man continued pulling the strings,
Commanding men, as if they were playthings,
The sacred became obscene, and man began to scream.

As he consulted with the realm of humanity,
It came to pass that he, the man, began to seek serenity,
Bothered as he was by the ways of the world,
He began to loath the pact he made as events unfurled.
Never a moment’s peace he could find,
Such was to be the state of things until the day he died,
The man began to see that he made a mistake,
Although inherently selfish he began to realize,
That the balance of the world should not lie with one mans stake,
And one night as the man began to close his eyes,
He sought the direction of the god which he had forsake.

“Dear lord, what a wretch I have been, I sold my soul for some gold, in mans eyes, and now mine are opened.  What can I do to turn back the clock, so bad has the world become under my watch.”

God answered with silence as evil reigned,
A testament to mans worst nature, man was arraigned,
Called to court for to answer for his sins,
And as time went on the lights grew dim,
Civilization fell apart as evil grew,
And with this the man had nothing else to do,
He took a bullet to his head to prematurely end his life,
But the devil wouldn’t have it, for he held all the knives,
All the cards, all the advantages, the world was now for Satan,
And so mans undoing was his own selfishness, the tale ends.
