Spring Flowers True

08 May 2006

When a thought was
as fresh as spring
To your hand
there was
daffodils to bring

Spring roses and
white dew drops too
These flowers in a bunch
all ready in delivery to you

Bluebells, in happiness to sing
colouring your heart bright
Adding this warmth
longing over distant
coldness of night

Just to think of you
to reach out and know
Where there was love
in your heart, this was to grow .

“It was a lovely sight. - The bluebells in your hand
baffle you with their inscape, made to every sense.”
From a journal entry for 9 May 1871
by Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889),
one of the romantic poets of British Victorian England
