Why do fish habitat studies? So we can find ways to save fish from extinction? So researchers can receive “grants” to tell what is already common knowledge? So some can earn wages extracting water-based resources? To find out how much fish one drift net can take out of the sea in a boat’s lifetime? The Fish People answered my query: “What do we think of studies done on our Earth habitat? They are of no consequence. If Mother Earth is distraught; cannot provide for the Fish People, there will be no Fish People in the seas, lakes or rivers. If she is happy and healthy, can provide for ten billion of us, there could be ten billion Fish People swimming the channels of her veins. We have no claim here, no expectation. We are children of the Universe and travel far and wide. Unlike the human, we do not conceive death; we leave our bodies everywhere they are of Earth. As for your studies, a word of awareness for you: “studies” serve only those who make them. |

I so enjoy the way your mind works, and how you weave it through your poetic gift. I believe all of the above are true...now the earth... When she has had enough, nobody will need to question that. She is a very tolerant hostess. |

Thank you for the thoughts... It is sad to see the results of greed in our lakes and rivers. In the end, it always seems that the fruit of our greed comes back to hurt us later. “We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best that we can find in our travels is an honest friend.” –Robert Louis Stevenson |

Another enjoyable read. On a 'humorous' note: when I was in college, eons ago someone received a grant to study the mating habits of a small fish supposedly living in the LA flood control channel. Funny part about it, that year there was no water to be seen anywhere in said channel. The best guess was the proposal was well written, and read by someone in Washington DC who had never been to southern California, had no idea what the LA flood control 'reservoir' looked like. HAHA. The sad part of this story? About the same time, a friend of mine submitted a proposal to study a truly endangered habitat of desert plants, and was told the study was of no consequence.... therefore, it was not funded. |
