American Tragedy He was a family man Principled to a flaw When the looting began He was an officer of the law A husband to a wife A father to his children Living an undistinguished life When the mayhem began His wife told him to stay She told him not to be a dolt He told her that they would be OK Behind the dead bolt Honor demanded What his office required He worked to save the stranded And returned home bone tired While he was away Looters broke into his house And had their brutal way With his children and his spouse When he saw the broken bodies The shattered expressions The extent of the atrocities Brought home his transgressions He was found dead He could not live with his duplicity He put a bullet into his head And sought forgiveness from his brutalized family |
