I wrapped you in shadows
as a friend with his hands
around your breath
that made it all ok
for the pain to go away

I kissed your eyes one time
for each of the years
we had been apart
you smiled and cursed my name
but you were gentle even then

with your heart and hell wishing
and you leaned your head there
on my shoulder for moments
til they came and covered you
with the sheet of forgetfulness

I talk to the trees now
along the pathway of your name
they seem to remember your songs
they play them on the wind
and touch where you walked

with their most loving shadows
