The Sum Of Love

Look upon Me.
My weary eyes
tell of time not lost,
but of suffering
beyond understanding.

Look upon My teeth,
broken and crimson stewards
of the spoken truth.

Taste the blood
running freely from
swollen nostrils,
stinging eyes,
and innocent lips.

I bent upon the altar
of a desperate courtyard
as My skin was stripped
from its ravaged flesh
at the hands of perfect priests.

I debated not
the call to stand
in a murderer's stead
when offered as innocent.

My tongue rested
while thorned crown
was beaten into place
by lost souls.

Rivers red flowed from My brow,
muddied by sweat and choking dust
as I walked alone under the weight of all men,

while the fists and spit
of brethren found my
labored passing.

Do you see Mother?
I make all things new.

Was it so that only one
carried the cross with Me
when My spirit lifted
yet My body broke?

So it was written.

Forgiveness, My only answer
while nails split flesh and bone
of hands that held no weapon
and feet that trespassed not.

And, as My body rested,
broken beyond understanding
at the will of My Father,
I sang to all of you,

"I love you this much."

I am always amazed when I see such a brilliant write with no responses.  (Weekends are usually slow, I find.)  This is so very touching, Kevin.  A big bump to the top!

Thank you all very much for your incredibly kind and encouraging words.  I wrote a second poem (part II of sorts) titled, "The Sum of Love Recounted" - most assuredly on page 2 or 3 by now - that you might enjoy.  The message of that "Part II" being the resurrection of Christ.  I wrote it to parallel this poem.  I am glad you enjoyed this one.  It feels good to be back in the midst of such wonderful poets and refreshing blue pages.

Warmest regards always,

Kevin
