Visiting Earth on a Guest Pass

Closing The Door

My home looks south all year, watching for the change of seasons.
It’s a near thing in California, there’s summer and a kind of spring,
the turnings so subtle even the trees sometimes miss their timing,
give a snow of white flowers in February, falling leaves in June.
Looking south and watching, the house knows what the finches can’t tell,
fresh in from wherever finches go when the winter is spring.
It feels as if responding when the sun wanders is a kind of knowing,
and in the simple language of wood and nails, it speaks to me.
First come hints, the tiny ticks and squeaks, its evening woodsong bowed
by rosin and heat, always with a soft reprise played in the morning.
Sometimes a southward looking door will suddenly rub,
hinge gone subtly misaligned. Later there is solstice, and The Message.
It’s simple really, the way it forces me to know, and it never fails
except on cloudy days. There is a sensor and a safety switch to tell
the moving garage door someone’s in the way, and for the house to say
a season’s on the way when the sunrise turns due south on the horizon.
One morning, it stays open when I say close.
Nothing for it, the sensor’s blind and the door will stay open,
until the sun moves or I do homage. On that day I leave my car
and stand as shade, back warming while the door comes slowly down.
I know my home smiles then, and goes to sleep, its vigil done.

There are so many houses... You describe a home. *S*

This is absolutely beautiful, my friend. *S* Once again you weave a story that makes us think of all we miss... I am so grateful for your eyes... your talent... and your reminders. *S*

Ratleader, I am basking in the warmth and comfort of this.  I love how you understand your home and its environs, and the moods of the seasons.  I think this is my latest favourite of yours.

Suthern, comforting hugs.

A lovely piece of work Ed. Thank you.

Sometimes,
it is hard to find a response
amid the creaking hinges...

thank you.
