Some folks live for pleasure
Some folks live for Love
Some folks love for treasure
Some live for God above
What kind of fools must we be ?
To live from song to song...
Searching for a melody
To write rhymes for the wrongs.

Tommy is in the alley
Cold and broken down
Bent and spent from searching
For a song he's never found.

Songs drove Kris to ask...Why Me?
And helped him make it through the nights.
Goodman rode the City of New Orleans
Prine looked back on Paradise.

It was songs that drove Ol' Willie
They had him talking to the walls.
The night life made him crazy
and they labeled him "Outlaw"

We all dont ride down easy,
like Billy Joe wrote about.
Pass the bottle for Jim Croce
Its a shame his time ran out.

Songs drove Luke the Drifter
'Til he was long gone lonesome blue.
They took the chains from his heart,
Now they're wrapped 'round me and you.

There are songs that come from living;
From running hard and drinking deep.
There are songs that come from dying.
And some come in your sleep.

There are songs that come so freely,
They're like a gift from up on high.
Some songs cost you dearly.
Some songs pass you by.

Tommy is in the alley
Cold and broken down
Bent and spent from searching
For a song he's never found.

What kind of fools must we be?

The kind that would keep company with Willie and Kris and Johnny and funky Donnie Fritts and Croce and well, you know them Uriah. The kind of fools that have something to say and are willing to go the distance.

This poem is terrific. Thank you.

Like my old dad used to say, "It's according to who you ask!" Awesome!

Uriah

Place me on the music stand   this song
is bursting from my mood
and I can’t stand in curve and see
how fine strung time is distancing
my breathing in and breathing out
percussion now in fling about
would find the drizzle drain of verve
and close it with one honest cord

Thanks for reminding me of myself.  I enjoy your poetry!

You must surely be a musician, this reads so lyrically, I thought it must surely be a song.

Enjoyed.

What kind of fools?  Surely the music-lovin' kind....poets and musicians have something bursting inside them that just has to get out  and communicate with others....Much enjoyed this, Uriah, m'friend......jo
(BTW...I liked your choices of musicians/songwriters...Jim Croce was one of my favorites from those times.)
