Someone told me to listen, to the birdsong, and I did. To my surprise I heard something, that from my ears had been hid. I found a tranquil park and sat upon a bench, to listen to the melody of a lark or a finch. As I sat there all was still and quiet, I could not hear a birdsong There was not a bird in sight. But on this waning winter's day, the sun was gently warm. A southern breeze caressed my weary mind, and whispered, "No harm,...no harm." The sky seemed bluer than blue somehow. As I watched wispy cloud dancers dancing, then stop and take a bow. Then from somewhere oer my head, thunder came down a'crashing. Clad in black feathers shining, sat a fellow stately and dashing. The raven sat upon a limb, coarse song split the silence. My mind hurled a wretched curse, "Why bring ye me this violence?" My curses caused me much discomfort, my peace of mind was lost. The raven seemed not to care, the princely sum his song had cost. Another joined him! They two seemed to taunt me! Then another and another, now there was a chorus up in a tree! Amidst the din and clatter, the voice came upon the wind, and whispered softly to me once again. "Listen,...listen to the birdsong," spoke the wind. Song? I questioned, without a moments thought. Song does not bring the chaos, these black devils have brought! "Listen to the birdsong," came again the gentle whisper. Twas a whisper I could not hear with my ears, but I heard it with my heart. Caw! Caw! Came the chorus from this one, then that. As I listened to the birdsong, from the bench where I sat. At first it seemed to have no reason, it seemed to have no rhyme. Then a sweet note entered into my soul, and a melody began to climb. Caw! Caw! They all sang, in celebration of their carefree life. "Look at me!" They seemed to say, "I have no fear! I have no worries! I have no strife!" I listened gratefully to the birdsong, as the happy singers flew away. But it was not Caw! Caw! That I heard them say. They each and everyone looked back at me, as the chorus I joined in, Haw! Haw! I laughed! "Come back and sing again." There is but one wish for you, I wish to impart. Next time you hear a birdsong,... listen with your heart. |

Very interesting piece. I have heard many birdsongs in my area, I agree with their beauty. Guess I'm not as open to the crow however, integral part of life yes, but they are nature's version of nails on a chalkboard to me. Enjoyed the poem however. Steven Birds hold a very special place within my life...for their song, and also their ability to fly. I love birds! Inside this room of bone and skin I awaken to the possibility of wing. yes, it is always feathers and flight and the changing way of shadows and something about light. Thank you for your lovely poem!! |

I envy you many things, Steven, something I'm sure you've been unaware of....but the ability to hear this music, in this way....that's one thing I don't need to envy because it is there. With the heart. Always. ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |

Sometimes I think sweating bullets might be easier than writing these lines then sometimes they seem to just miraculously appear. This one was somewhere in between but I know it would not "be" if not for the encouragement and inspiration I read in your replys and your poems. Thank you all very much. :-) Welcome Buttons I think I got you first post. Thats special! :-) |

The raw course caw of the largest raven comes to my window this time of year, as well. I sat with you on that park bench, m'friend... a true delight, this read, for you truly did find the birdsong. |

Steven, you most assuredly listened to the birdsong with your own heart! I doubt that I will ever hear the call of a crow again without thinking of you and this glorious poem of birdsong! You wear Nature's mantle very well, my friend! Loves 'n hugs, Linda |
