Punching Out

A tender youth, a valiant prize,
I held passion within the eyes;
And took the charge for all it worth
To win the game began by birth.
To tend the stock, as did my dad,
And make better the life we had…
Ran headlong, dreams and goals forewent,
Unto walls of livelihood spent.

I punched the clock, I rode the tide
That swallowed me— that stole my pride—
That rendered me, a man of hope,
But a miserable misanthrope.
I limped each day, dreaming of death
Never slowing to catch my breath,
Until, alas, there came the bell
I learned to love— to hate as well.

But in the night, that chronic thread
That I hung by when left for dead,
Would of it’s own accord give slack
Until I watched all from my back.
Though tearful in Ambition’s wake,
It never seemed my choice to make…
And so I’d rise to die again
Each day, much to my own chagrin.

But God, dear God, how can it be
That man in the mirror I see—
That man who stares with vapid eyes
That scream an endless churn of “whys?”
Could somehow cast this view askance,
See beyond what’s given by chance?
Dare, seeing what we’re living for,
Believe there might be something more?

Yes but so much unsaid

Oh it is great to read a new one Michael, and one with such a punch of a message.

It think therein those lines, is the hope of all mankind actually.  To dare dream there is more is what sometimes keeps us all going.

Good to read you.

Even while we speak, envious time has passed: pluck the day, putting as little trust as possible in tomorrow!

Yes, what serenity Said...

this is the beginning
of the begin...

a step unfolding underneath
needful toes...

tell on, Michael.

If not for us,
then for yours.

It's good to have you home again.
