There was a routine
we had.

I loved
He trusted
In return for his love I trusted.

Once met in the grassy field,
With purple flowers mounted high
as his shoulder,
we would travel down that
Red dirt path
worn from our daily tracks.

He gave me a feeling
that filled my heart
More than any other boy had
No leakages and no holes
Just watertight conviction
Of our loyalty.
He gave me everything he had
Oh I remember how me wanted to please me
More than he wanted air to breathe

We soared together
Even if we didn’t win every time.
He gave me hope
That I could feel like this
All the time.
Well it’s more than anyone ever gave me before.

He said it in every motion of his head
Flicker of his eyes
And lips pulled back so I could see him grinning.

"I love you"

Oh remember when we used
To lie together on the grass
And watch the stars
After hours spent playing chasey?
Didn’t matter if
he always won.

I said sorry
God, I screamed it.

I didn’t want to do it
But someone else would have anyway
I was too selfish for that.
I remember those last moments
More clearly that I remember yesterday

It was just me and you darling,
Like always
I wanted you to know that.

Even when he screamed
Have you ever heard a horse scream in pain?
Ever hear the utter human voice
That comes from his mouth
When he knows he’s going to die?

Even as it all went black
I wanted to tell him
I still had my hands around his neck
I still whispered the same sweet-nothings in his ears
I still loved him.

The worst thing was
I knew he still loved me.

Wow, this is a strong poem so full of love and then so full of hate. When I read your poem I thought of the saying 'you always hurt the one you love' and you have made the saying true even unto death.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

thank you. Goodness I still haven't gotten over it then. I thought I had and then BAM, off goes the tears again. He was very special. I thought I needed to write to him and say sorry. He was a special horse.

I'm sure he was and I'm sure you also loved him after all why wouldn't you, he was faithful to the end.

This is so completely heart wrenching.

It reminded me of one of my favorite books--

"Of Mice and Men"

and I know the analogy isn't exact, but the pain is the same...

can't say that I "enjoyed" the journey with you, but oh how I felt it.

And might I add, if this is a true story, what a very strong person you must be...

"I loved - he trusted"...nothing describes an animal better - and there is no stronger love.

This is a beautiful piece of writing..I will read it more than once. Thank you....

I can't put to words the depth of emotion this poem evokes from within. AMAZING!

Thank you everyone, your comments mean so much and I am so grateful you took the time to read and respond to my writing. I feel the need to explain a little what that poem was about. My uncle owned this horse, Jazzman, as a kind of investmetnt I suppose. He was kept at our farm and I was responsible for training him. This was during a difficult time and I often found myself thanking Jazzie repeatedly for giving me so much and asking for so little. Anyway he was only young, just past three, and my uncle wanted him to start on cross country jumping, even though I hadn't introduced him to jumping at all yet. I pleaded long and hard but the general gist of the answers he gave were "If you don't do it I'll only find someone else who can". I couldn't bear the thought of someone else manhandling him....Anyway it ended up with him instructing me to do a three foot 6" Corner jump, which is an awful idea with an green horse. We didn't make it and Jazzie was put down while I was in hospital. He shattered his cannon bone on the jump and more when he landed. My leg was crushed underneath him when he fell. Apparently the paramedics had a hard time pulling my arms from his neck. Anyway. Sorry this is so long, and thank you again for reading. xxxx

What a story..The love of an animal is so unselfish, unconditional..It's true, they ask for so little and give so much!

Thank you for sharing the story with us.

Your poem brought tears to my eyes and your story made me cry. A beautiful job about a well loved, sorely missed friend.
