I have never understood why
scars will choose one day to wake,
take the center stage of my awareness
and demand a little vigarish
to skim the surface from my soul,
to leave me raw and open to the eyes of the world.

My body carries souvenirs
and will shed one on a whim,
through the normal span of years
each stands alone but fills a place
in lines of luminaria
on the sidewalks of my soul;
an off chance bit of glass
or gilding metal keeps the score,
or a little black steel splinter deeply aged in blood
and memory,
keepsakes from battles lost or won,
sometimes an old torn muscle,
maybe healed decades or more,
decides it’s time again I noticed
the past can never be undone.

I may see it happen or simply feel the startle
as it takes my breath away,
that is how it was today
hard into morning’s hustle I was taken by surprise,
perhaps just to remember
the stalk and creep,
the sweaty cold of silent wait
to loose the lance of light,
the calculated terror
running in the night,
or just so I don’t forget in general,
to make me realize
all the bits and scraps
the clips and images
the slips of memory’s lights my body chose to save;
I am a living scrap book
walking cluttered pathways
slowly to the grave.

Oh, dear icebox, aren't we all but look in the corners and you'll find the roses there.

Whatever trauma can surface all of a sudden again, that's true.
You say it with your usual mastery, dear icebox.
And yes we are all together on this same Path, no exception.
Sometimes we stop to consider what has been, but then the Now asks again for our attention, because we have still so much to do and to give.
You share your wisdom and we are so grateful for this.
Love,
Margherita

um...oh yeah!

sometimes a smile, sometimes a wince--but from the first time I ever read you, I just knew you were one of those guys who could tell stories for a decade without ever repeating himself. That is, if you were inclined to let yourself "go there."

Hugs m'love--from a fellow time traveler.

Yes ... I've felt that 'startle' ... the sudden recognition of a memory that seeped out of the crevice where I 'thought' I had carefully hidden them~

I felt this one deeply~

Dang those critters! One can pop up again when you least expect it! No matter how deep you bury them, they scratch their way back up to the surface! They can blind-side you without a moment's notice ~ and at the most inopportune time!

Perhaps we should carry a rose quartz crystal! That might keep them at bay! We'd be feeling so much love and peace that we'd pay them no mind!

You are such a wonderful writer, Dear Box of Ice!
