Cirrus rose

wide eyed, as a child,
I stood

wanting to reach my hand ~
dive into its fleece,
melt within the embrace
of this . . .

Hemingway saw these things.

Scratching bloodink
on his Royal Deluxe.

He must have fought
sublimation

to capture

still life photos
of the dead walking

alive

swallowing them whole
spitting them
onto clean white sheets of linen

later to be pressed
and lain

volumes of beauty
side by side

as soldiers marching

an Army of misery.

He must have sensed
utter beauty

still life photos
of the dead walking

swallowing them whole
then spitting them

later to be pressed
and lain

volumes of pain

smiling at sy's reply...

and you KNOW I have a Hemingway fixation too.

so this:

"He must have fought
sublimation"

root word, sublimate:

1.Chemistry. To cause (a solid or gas) to change state without becoming a liquid.

2.To modify the natural expression of (a primitive, instinctual impulse) in a socially acceptable manner.
To divert the energy associated with (an unacceptable impulse or drive) into a personally and socially acceptable activity.

v. intr. Chemistry
To transform directly from the solid to the gaseous state or from the gaseous to the solid state without becoming a liquid.

Considering his appetite for liquids (and my own) I found the implications of this'n intriguingly fun.

I nod, too, thinking of prolly way too many variables.

sublimation...I think not.

I love you susie q.

First of all you guys are way too good to me.

aww Sy, I know and it wasn't there either.
right back to you

Thank you Donna, I like that - what you said, I love imagery.

Thanks Raph, that was really nice to say.  I have had a lot of really good teachers, you know?  *smile*  That made me feel good.

(can't you see I edited it like 5 times)

*laughing*

Gettin' picky in me old age.

Susan - *smile*  I knew you would like that part and hey, that is by you, ya know!
Thank you.

Karen, how odd (not really) that you pick that one word out because *laughing here* I went to the dictionary and looked that up like 3 times to make sure I was using it in the correct form, for what it needs to mean and still was not sure if I should have used it or not.

Thank you, I love you too.

Thank you Maree - you are so sweet to me.  I truly appreciate that.

Susan?  You are much too kind, but thank you.

Thanks guys, I have a Hemingway thing too.  And its the way he wrote, simple but astounding, straight forward yet poetic and like Kerouac, I see him as a tortured soul who must have seen so much beauty in life, he became bored eventually, it killed his spirit ~ this world and being a true writer -without his words . . . he was already dead to himself.

If I could send each of you one Hemingway - it would have to be "The Old Man and the Sea."

I know, hard choices - but THAT - man, that just . . .

One day, maybe would like to see Sun Valley.

Wow.

Papa saw the Idaho sun and the light within the souls of others.  Yet the light within his own soul always was just beyond the rim of his horizon.  I remember when he died.  I couldn't fault the simplicity of his choice but a cold rage at life stayed with me a long time.  In many times and places in my life by chance I have been where he was and thought of him.

Thanks for writing this poem!

started a movable feast last week...funny you wrote this.....you have a way of paying homage to the greats , but in your own unique style, not just as a review of their work, but as its own entity, if you know what i mean.......hey......im kind of literature wise a bit challenged still, should read a lot more than i have, guilty of being a classic cliffnotes reader back in the day.....but you make us reach, truly do....

I have to admit that I haven't read any of Hemingway's books, but this poem makes me want to - but then your poetic magic is so great that perhaps I would be disappointed.  I doubt if I would get such pleasure out of every word, as I do out of your art.
