Too Hot To Drink 1: It is the year 1497. And Charlie Columbus Still thinks he went to China Some five years ago. I am talking with a group Of senior Royal Navy officers. I’m trying to convince them Of the need for Great Britain To find a fast-track to the Orient Before the Spanish and the Portuguese. They say they are studying the problem, That this might involve sailing Round the southern cape of Africa, Passing through the equatorial seas. It is thought that the heat of the tropics Would cause the equatorial waters to boil. No, I assure them. The water in the tropics isn’t boiling, It’s just too hot to drink. 2: The bathroom has changed little In the last 1500 years. It still has a mirror, and everything. Before the bathroom was invented, It was preceded and made possible By the invention of the “room.” So people wouldn’t have to be outside. The door was invented So people could come inside from outside As when the weather was bad. The window was invented So people could look outside Without actually having to go there, And see what was going on inside While staying out. Before the room, People had to be outside Even if the weather was bad. Cloths were invented So people could undress themselves. This illustrates the march Of human technology in reverse. Today's aphorism: Hey, look at thanksgiving from the Turkish point of vies? ... |
