The Angel of New Orleans

She turned her back but a moment
But that’s all the time it took
The sky blackened, the rain fell
It seemed the whole world shook

When she looked down again
The sight caused her to cry
The beloved city of her spirit
Looked as if it would die

Reaching out her heavenly arms
She gathered the city to her breast
She felt the fear of a thousand souls
As they faced Mother Nature’s test

A moment ago there was laughter
And jazz and blues to play
There were parades and parties
Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler*

The colors of the city
Purple, green and gold
Turned to gray and brown
When the city’s heart went cold

She watched the waters rising
Sweeping away the colored beads
Without a care for humanity
Rushing through at amazing speeds

In the silence of the night
She heard a keening cry
It was her own voice she heard
Praying the city wouldn’t die

One by one they left it
Abandoned the city in fear
Alone, she stood guard over it
Brushing away a tragic tear

She heard the whispers of the dead
Crying out to keep N’awlins alive
Save the past for the future
Our city’s spirit must survive!

A small light shone in the water
A dubloon from parade’s past
Twinkling in the murky water
Brilliant in dark contrast

Suddenly she felt the hope
Of her city’s fervent dreams
Her heart swelled with loving pride
She was the Angel of New Orleans

*Let the good times roll

You are indeed, a poet divine! I commend you on this extremely moving write. Not only were you able to vividly portray the horrors of Katrina, you also injected some spirit and hope for the survivors!

There are many hard rows to hoe, ahead! But in time,
"Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler".

Fantastic write..the hope coming through the despair.
An equally amazing picture Sharon!
Well done indeed!!

Thank you all for reading this..it was difficult to write but it was burning inside me so I had to let it out. I've been to New Orleans and met some wonderful people there - a lot of older people who helped out at a convention that I attended. I'm hoping they are all ok...along with our own family here.

Thank you! (Karen - your city WILL survive!)

I do think each City has a soul...and there must be an angel for that soul.  Such an eloquent poem, Sharon!   .....jo

Bright city of laughter has been brought to her knees......BUT......in the darkness you hear sound of music. The soul of this city.
As the waters recede the sound in the distance is of the guitar, the horn, the song being sung in her haunting strain.
Yes she is on her knees, but the music has not died. Her lights will shine bright once again and the angel will smile with delight.
Good job
Hugs BonBon

I felt like bring this back up to show the heart inside that person whose birthday is today.  I loved this then, and still do now.

I'm replying again because this haunts me yet. Unlike your angel, we became afraid to cry, lest we be unable to stop.

If we all cried the tears we could, the levees would breach yet again.

This is one of the finest examples of your compassion and empathy, Sharon.

One house at a time.

That's how we're doing it.
