Daddy was a runaway,
the bottle was his home.
No one understood him...
but too late, maybe me.

And we were more alike than not,
though he was 6 foot two
and I’m barely 5 foot three,
we both fought restraints
placed upon our personality.

He ran away from home,
from the anger and daily misery;
and so did I at age of five,
for I wanted to feel more alive
than others allowed me to be.

Daddy was a runaway,
the bottle was his home.
No one understood him...
but too late, maybe me.

And still sometimes I run
from the reality of human hostility;
and some days I just run
from everything and everyone,
even me....

Daddy was a runaway,
the bottle was his home.
No one understood him...
but too late, maybe me.

thanking you for the hug

and as I sit here...after all these years,
I still cry sometimes over what coulda or shoulda been but never was

we would have argued endlessly over all kinds of issues, race, politics and all of life
and still, he would have been...daddy

its not always the run but the direction we seem to find ourselves going ....

so much power and intensity in these simple lines

it must have been a hard poem to write, trying to give reason to your dad's outwardly irresponsible and unfathomable behaviour by suggesting some similarites both of you share. Lesser poems would have focussed on inflicted hurts. i'm touched by the compassion and magnanimity in this piece.

heart hugs....sigh, I hope writing about it helps you heal....

I keep a fragrance bottle my
muse gave me when I met him
in endless winter and he
settled me into remembering
who I am.

No smarty remarks here. Just tugs on my heart that I can't resist. And lots of hugs, 'cause I can and would. Peace my friend. Likely my most favorite that you've ever written. How glad I am that I found it.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Oh my, Larry, but this one tugs mine too. I had forgotten I even posted it, for it's been a work in progress for song lyrics for over twenty years. And still, it isn't really what I want it to be. But thank you for being here with me tonight. It's pouring down rain, and I've spent a good part of this day crying. so it feels good to have your warm heart speak to me, even if it's just in cyberbeat.

OH

I think we are related.

Much understood, you have (actually you do) no idea.

This reads like a song you know?
You must play the guitar, I know you do.

For some odd reason, I hear Johnny Cash singing it.

(I swear I didn't even read the reply until I came back here about the lyrics.  See?

EEEEERIEEEEE . . .)

lol
well, maybe roseann's ex anyway
crowley could do it...
and yes, the guitar chords are down on paper for part of this
and many years back, when I first wrote that  ~daddy was a runaway~
there was a young man I knew who sang it true,
as he knew the ins and outs of the storyline
(on his own terms)
but he was way too dangerous to be around
so I ran away
