I rise from my bed at night. Still drowsy, I’m staring into the fifteen-hundred-thousand-eyed city, as though from an airplane window. Fifteen-hundred-thousand candles light the cave in Yad Vashem.* I flick on the switch. Tonight, I’m just one of them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * The Children's Memorial, in Yad Vashem, hollowed out from an underground cavern, is a tribute to the approximately 1.5 million Jewish children who perished during the Holocaust. Memorial candles, a customary Jewish tradition to remember the dead, are reflected infinitely in a dark and somber space, creating the impression of millions of stars shining in the firmament.
