in the shadows

If I were possessed
of all my faculties,
I would have guessed
I could feel pain
walking barefoot
on these broken links,
left from what seems
to be an endless chain
of misunderstandings
shattered on the glassy rocks
of foolish expectations;
instead,
there is an emptiness again,
the familiar,
the friendly hollow space
within which
may be rung a bell
three times,
and at those times
can issue forth a tone unheard
outside the gates of Hell,
except perhaps
by those
whose thoughts of childhood
left early in life to find survival
only in the unseen shadows,
the emotional wraiths,
those suckled
at the stony tit of being alone
where the taste of life
lingers as a paradox,
the presence
of that which is missing,
that which is absent
within a place of ancient ice,
the cavern I called safe
for longer than my eyes could see;
your notice is not needed
as I feel its numbing chill in me
always
and recognize it as my only home.
Have I mentioned to you,
in passing,
that I am going blind?
No matter,
so much of life
and its hapless hordes
should pass unseen;
anyway,
I doubt that in the end
it will carry much meaning
in my soul
where most nightmares
are memories of visions,
flashes of horrors frozen in time,
choices remaindered
as stains left on life’s pathways
uncleansed by prayer or rhyme,
where the few safe moments,
the pure singular joys
shared with the willing,
were built of touch and taste,
of sound and scent,
shared now also
mostly
only
when I am sleeping
alone
with the dead.

"where the few safe moments,

were built of touch and taste,
of sound and scent"

in the whole of life, just one of these senses can become a lifeline in and of itself

Life takes what it will take, and at times there seems to be a sense of humor behind it that is other than human, or possibly just too primitive for our modern sensibilities. The best a person can wish for, is to have the last laugh. I've known that to happen too, but it's rare.

agreed...yet...I will deal with the hapless hordes in return for the times when I see the hope..in the face of a child, the color of a lily...or the eyes of someone that loves me.

it's all give and take...and there is a purpose for that.

You certainally know how to write the "dark" side of feeling - it echos its pain-

This well written, sad and lonley piece has spread over me, as I sit and read for the third time, a sense of quiet sadness. My insides are churning, trying to form some type of resistance. No words from me can change anything. But know that I sit here and read and feel for you. If I were your neighbor you would have delivered to your door, a New York cheesecake, in an attempt to see you smile.  best to you icebox, martyjo

It's hard to know what to say....this poem makes me feel sad.     Maybe that will help?

How well you link the endless chain, icebox.  (of misunderstandings)
How aptly put is that!!!  I am humbled by your poem good poet,
in that I don't feel so all alone.
