in the shadows

There still is time left,
a little time for me,
to walk the tidal edge
with just the Mother ocean
in my life,
and the serpentine detritus
that runs along
beside us both,
provoking imagery
like tea leaves
reflecting errors and mistakes
as easily as successes
and brief moments of private victories;
I count you among none of these,
for that
would assume love’s intent
in an adult life,
that by my own decision
required inordinate control,
living with precision,
the statics of holding threads
and lifelines
unseen by most,
keeping rage
and happiness
beneath my tongue,
shared with no one
save this endless surf.

It is cold tonight,
unseasonably,
hard on a body
too long ignored,
too oft abused,
a body scarred with an ache
too old and dried to raise a tear,
borrowed
by a soul too used to be alone
tonight,
yet
the call of primal force
brought me here,
a dark moonless night,
with needle rain
and steady wind
pushing me
along the water’s edge
where just the smell alone
cuts through the pain of walking,
where the steady crash and hiss
drowns the sound of talking,
quietly,
to this source of all the planet’s life.

I’ll be back in bed before dawn’s light,
before any other’s are awake
to stake their daily claims
upon my flesh;
like you,
they’ll never know
the nights my soul
must go alone
and walk the earth,
to find a moment’s peace.

Loved the last line~

Oh, man can I ever relate to this poem, it made the hairs on the back of my neck rise.....

Gave me a chill....
Though I enjoyed reading it...

I search for those precious moments
of peace also Icebox, they are what drives
me on.  Enjoyed your words.

I really want to care,
I want to feel something,
let me dig a little deeper
nah, still nothing~
my give a DAMN is busted. Jodee
