Relics of the days – And so they fall

quote:
Salina Journal
100 years ago this week
January 30, 1905

“The hoodlum element was not so bad at the opera
house Saturday night.  The Journal hopes to see the
time when such a thing as hoot, yell, whistle and
feet stamping will not be allowed in the opera
house.  Such things are relics of the days
when this country was given over to the cowboys.”
[Emphasis added]

They haven’t killed
the cowboy yet, not here
where cattle trails are still visible
from the sky
where wagon wheel trail-lines
are the hawk’s east and west
and the cowboy can still be heard,
whistling against the wind.

The cowboy once was
the baddest of the bad, when a horse’s
power was grilled against the steel
of the rifle, staunch against the shot,
and loyal to the bone, no matter how bad
the cowboy, for it was the horse
he loved.

The romantic void in a heavyweight time
drew writers to depict a cowboy
for who he was, no malingerer here,
and somehow…it drew the ladies in,
the young boys as well,
who was that masked man?
and suddenly a white hat appeared,
one or two cowboys became western justice,
even while wearing the grit
of storms.

They flash forward now, one hundred years,
and can enter an opera hall, an auditorium,
or community center,
the show before them, raucous,
unmannerly, ill-worded, wild and not without
hoots, yells and whistles, and more,

and they pull out a copy
of H. G. Well’s The Time Machine-
An Invention

and wonder where these creatures
came from.

Now we know, don't we....that masked man was....us.

Europeans and some effete wannabe Europeans in this country, whine that we are a country of cowboys, but that makes me proud. A cowboy was strong, independent, honest, humble, willing to work for every penny and every bite of food, and true to the things he loved.

Considering what I've seen of Europe and Europeans, not to mention the wannabes, yeah...sign me up. I'll be a cowboy any day, and proud of it.

All I can say is: EEE-HAA!
The opera house ain’t no place fer yer horse, lady.
Unlessin’ he don’t drink too much.  Whisky’s a nickel a-shot

This write is a marvelous depiction of the way our legacy should always be remembered.
My hero was John Wayne, as a cowboy.

Enjoyed your write Sunshine.
