He rose his skin was rippled wake foam within his curly grays dancing goodbye figurettes sadly on his chest I prayed that I hadn't seen what I saw the plate of bone protect the heart that I so loved regret knowing that he died a death as I watched in innocence of wonder as a child that this-- home between his ribs his strength iceberg just the glimpse of it sank me to my knees: It meant the end of us, and neither of us cried but we pretended that I hadn't seen as my father closed his robe saying, "Now you know," and begged coffee from the kitchen so he could die another death weeping that I'd seen. He liked it strong and black so I filled it damned near to the brim so I would take my time to bring his dignity back to him in his favorite mug. Taking careful steps of death as if my grace could save him now I placed it there before him proud I hadn't spilled a drop. Then we met each other's eyes worried of the bad omen of my perfect servitude, laughing at the joke we were just me and him again. |

Incredible, Serenity! I can vividly imagine the scene and feel the emotions. I love your sensitivity and keen and creative eye for detail. sadie |

Just had to come back and grab this for my library! It reminds me of the time after my dad's open heart surgery-- Rough times, but times where true dignity displayed itself. You write of it so well... Of all your great poetry, this is my favorite. in greatest admiration, and humbled to one sooo wise, I bow to you! oh, enjoyed tea time, too! sadie |

This brought back memories, not sure why, but it did, this inspired my poem "Beyond the Ending" which happened over 40 years ago. Gloom |

This is love as well as it could be written (and shamefully I'm jealous, not of the write but of the memory) Poets against the war is redundant |

thank you My father and I didn't even have to talk to communicate, we were so fine-tuned to each other's moods that we quite often did this silent dance of understanding to communicate. It's fortunate to know just one person like that in a lifetime. For that person to be your father is a miraculous blessing. I'm very fortunate to have had that, and I'm equally lucky to have friends who understand when I miss him. thank you all so very much |

filled it damned near to the brim so I would take my time to bring his dignity back to him in his favorite mug. Oh, lady... for me, it was my mother... and she always wanted a half cup... I remember when I brought her just that... a mug that was only a half-circle, emblazoned on the front with "you asked for half a cup of coffee?"... and in the silliness of that moment, the knowing stepped aside and it was just me and her... |

"He liked it strong and black so I filled it damned near to the brim so I would take my time to bring his dignity back to him in his favorite mug." This was so visual, Karen. A simply beautiful poem with so much meaning, simple elegance, and love, and I am grateful you shared it. *hugs* jo |

Serenity...I must say this was very touching I do believe you have a special gift of touching people with your words, cause you sure have touched me. I have a special relationship with my daughter like the one you and your father had. I could really tell you about the closeness we share but then you already know through your relationship with your father...Paul ~~To share my poems with you is to share my heart with you~~ |
