Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2005-01-28 11:03 AM

Its one of those unpardonable nights

The kind, before which, the Sun doesn’t set
So much as it gathers all the warmth in the land
And flees, cowering behind the horizon

Not enough wood exists
For the woodstove to burn away the spiderwebs
Of hoarfrost from the windowpanes

And there is too much Moon
Pregnant and bloated, it spills itself into the shack
Settling in cold blue puddles on the walls and floor

The birds feel it too
They become statuary, fearing rightfully, that a cry
Or a creak might fracture the world

So soon, when I put down this pen

I’ll climb the short flight up to the loft, hoping
To find a few crumbs of warmth
Still residing under the blankets

Leftover from other nights, other beds

Stay warm Yeti....
It's damn cold here today too.

Leftover from other nights, other beds

Perhaps, the memories will warm you.
Well done Ed.

Ed

Makes me feel guilty for feeling cold in 50 degree weather..  Take care of yourself and stay warm!

Not too cold here today...
but there's still a different kind of warmth
that comes from the covers.

Great write.

Loads of fantastic imagery, Wranx. You know, I keep picturing this "shack" as you fondly call it. One day you'll have to post a picture of it for us!

Oh, I know this night - and the chill in the tile floor - the climb to the loft - the freeze of the sheets - the wood stove having lost its flame some time before my return to the cabin - brrrrr

Very vivid imagery - actually, it rather made me miss the chill winter nights on the mountain -

The ending on this is excellent - painful, but well cut

Well -- that was quite a ride, my friend.... your imagery here is superb -- as good as imagery gets in this language, and probably any other.

Even with higher outside temps and a heater blasting dry air onto me, I seek that leftover warmth, too...

Excellent write!!!

I was already feeling the cold up here in Ontario ~ You have now added to my chill with your vividly descriptive writing! You have a gift ~ and I am so pleased that you share it with your fellow Pipsters!

Just caught myself complaining about it being chilly in here because the thermostat was set at 70 instead of 72.....I do miss the fireplace though; Ratette won't let me burn it because I just got through painting the ceiling and she doesn't want to stain it with the leftover smoke......!

The moon was exceptionally full
this cold January...

full, and close, ponderously close...
and puddled the snow in blue...

I saved this one to come back to, as I knew I'd be having one of these....

rain rain rain rain rain

watchin' the river run

(and I know there's a moon somewhere laughing her ass off too)
