When we arrived last April, locals warned us about the trade winds: one could go mad from their keening -- Like women in a constant mourning, they are, faces of the lost replayed with each wail! Build a break, that’s the only way, said the town grocer as he handed me ripe guavas and apple-bananas, of trees or fences or glass, anything to shield you from that relentless blast! Our cottage backs to cypress trees, I explained again and again, although I pictured their boughs hell-bent on heading East. Oh cypress, they exclaimed, them’s the worst! Trees made of limbs from the dead! Tear them out, put up a wall instead! A fair price for paradise, I’d say as we lay awake each night while banana palms slapped the house and our front gate slammed open and shut. The old timers never told us about the fog. Now January bleeds into February, a fixed landscape of sea-and-sky slate, a charcoal sketch scratched out by a frustrated artist. For me, madness is monochrome. January bleeds into February, an unchanged landscape of nothingness – sea-and-sky twin mirrors; a sketch scratched out by an unsatisfied artist. damn I love the way you write Corinne... |

This is perfect. If I were to touch you, would you bleed a velvet river, running miracles through the sodden ground? --Moi |

I remember the "trades" as being rather sensuous. Anything but menacing. Different time, different place . . . enjoyed this glider |
