You came into the thrift store today,
seeking a clean white shirt
and dark clean pants,
a jacket to match...
to honor your mother
at her funeral.
You had no money,
paid with a charity voucher,

and when you left,
I handed you
some flowers in a vase
that had been a store display.

You turned and said
"I cannot pay for this"
I replied,
"That's OK,
please accept my condolences.
I am sorry the flowers
are silk, not real."

That thank you sigh you gave
was all the charity repayment
anyone should ever need.

Oh my Kacy - what a beautiful thing - compassion in action - this whole piece reaches in and tugs the heart strings starting the eyes to misting - thanks for sharing

Thank you, Susan. It happened this afternoon, and I shall never forget the thank you look on his face as he accepted the small bouquet.

*sigh*
just a small way to offer
unconditional human love

Hi Kacy: This is indeed a treat to read and to understand the meaning of this act to you.  Well done!!  Ken

This may be hard for you to accept, but it's still true anyway... What a beautiful loving and caring heart you do have. Your expressed act of kindness here has brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful. Wonderful. Thank you. -Bob

Sniffing a bit here with these replies. Thank you, passionate poet friends.
when he walked away, I could see a tear roll down his cheek. I had to hang out in the back room for a couple of minutes, to keep from crying.
