That Essential Stillness There is nothing to seek, nothing to call, And there are no spirits to placate at all. No cards to turn over, nothing to win, An essential stillness, a something within That the dark brings to light like a star. When the crush that should never come, comes; Just then, in the moment the spirit succumbs, One part of it holds, an implacable hush At the center in spite of the whirl and the rush, Sparkling quiet inside, where the real things are. No, nothing to seek, nothing to call, And surely no spirits to placate at all. No spirits that is, except one, In the essence of stillness, already begun, That the dark will bring forth like a star. |

Ed I think this may be one of my favorite poems of yours...and that's hard, because as you know, there are so many that are very special. This is just so well done! Applause! |

Sometimes thing that comes is pleasant... and other times it's the last thing one would want. Always it is honest. And yes, always it is essential. LOVE this! Always, Alyssa He was a man of sorrows |

without the dark, how then would we know the light is beautiful? Enjoyed this - Susan If I wander far enough, long enough, will I finally know . . . |

When the crush that should never come, comes; Just then, in the moment the spirit succumbs, One part of it holds, an implacable hush At the center in spite of the whirl and the rush, Sparkling quiet inside, where the real things are. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So true, there is no placating what is real! Enjoyed the wisdom in your words, Ed~ Thank you, thank you~ |

It's not always easy to find the essentials... sometimes we need direction. So, this is a because its directions are flawless. Karilea - if I whisper, will you listen? Excellent write in thought, word, and rhyme! Yes, there is something about stillness! When I grew up, it seemed there were still moments, but as I become older and the world has "progressed so", it seems those moments have to be sought. Sometimes, I forget their importance! Thanks for sharing, Ed. This is among my favorites, too. cathy |

And when the master of free verse chooses rhyme... the result is beyond sublime. *S* At the center in spite of the whirl and the rush, Sparkling quiet inside, where the real things are. We find this place through different paths... sometimes, we're whirled there by the chaos... other times, we're led to the calm. We may not even know we need such a destination until we arrive... but then... as you've said... we know the real. This isn't just one of your best, my friend... it's one of poetry's best. *S* |

Many good words here, but these are my favorite: "When the crush that should never come, comes; Just then, in the moment the spirit succumbs," Dealing with the unimagineable is always unthinkable. Well done. Ken Through rubble and trouble and dark of night |

Rhyme should be safe, legal and rare...... I rhymed every poem when I was a kid -- the oldest one I've found that wasn't rhymed, was of a dream I'd had sometime in my mid-teens. I actually posted it here, I think, but I'm not sure. Now when I write with rhyme, I find myself mainly avoiding the things about it that will make me feel immature...... We have the tradition of rhyme in poetry from countries whose languages are rich in rhyme. For all its strength in other ways, English is rhyme-poor. ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸¸¸ºº> ~~(¸¸ ¸¸ºº> ~~~(¸¸ER¸¸ºº> |
