My husbands mother is my mother-in-love.  I hope you will bear with me the repost of these poems with thoughts of her.  She is dying, and tomorrow we will fly to Eureka to be with her and my husband's family.  I don't know how long I'll be gone and I will have no computer access...I will miss all of you.  My Passions family is very important to me!

The Wall of Time

They are sitting on black and white
stairs made of ordinary cold cement,
their faces turned towards each other.
Her bare legs in shorts are a dancers
and a scarf only partly hides pin-curled hair.
His pompadour turns up as does his mouth.
They are in love and it is 1951.

Fifty years have passed since that day
that hangs with other years in the hall.

The creak of the floorboards calls out the change
in the way they walk in the morning,
changing, changing from nylon stockings to slippers,
work shoes to sensible, eager to tired.
They wear it with pride.
They wear it with contrition.

The basement echo saddens this listener
knowing time gives and takes,
and holds love accountable for each gruff word,
each wild embrace, every I’m sorry.

The skin grieves, cringes and curls,
and they weave lotion into what might seem harsh
until softness sits with them into the evening,
watching the flickering living room walls
lit by television and the steady rise and fall
of falling asleep early.

On her way to turning down the sheets
she touches his hair and says, “come now”
as he smiles into a dream
and she straightens his black tie on the wall
on their 50th anniversary,
knowing it is more than the walls breathing
that makes a picture crooked,
and much more that straightens it.
--------------

The Gismo

She wore it
a badge of honor

Holding          straight
the S shaped curve of her back
enduring its pain for her pleasure

Upright    through the portals
her life span    she marched
taking it off and on like she opened and closed doors of humor
you can see in the name she gave it
although it steadied the pain     she could still poke it with her fun
they were allies    you see

Now she has abandoned it and its quirks
no longer does it mark the hours of her life
she has admitted time’s steady march
and no longer fumbles its complicated pull

Shlip shlip the drum of slippers shuffle
The sound she makes in partner with her walker now
I hear it still …..punctuating my night dreams
Shlip shlip is real

The gismo hides within the drawer of endings
no longer cleaving to the needs of this journey

She whispers lips of reed instruments
clear and fragile song
her wrists percussion testiment
still beating strong
---------

My thoughts and prayers are with you, and all of yours and Taylor's, Martie.  May the New Year bring to all of you what is needed, most...

and know I'm there, in your pocket.

Such a beautiful tribute, dear Martie. And it feels so good when love and beauty flow in this kind of relationship.
Surely your presence will make her feel that Angel's wings are embracing her.
Take care.
We will miss you too. But it is love that keeps you away and this is the best reason I can imagine.
Love and hugs.

I liked your poems. This stuff hurts, well at least it hurt when I had to watch my grandfather die.

It is always go to read you, but it is sad to read your subject.  We will all miss you, Martie.  I hope you find some peace on your voyage to see Taylor's mom.  Ken

You will be missed while away Martie..
Mother-in-love...how beautiful those words.
Taylor's mom is most certainly lucky to have you as a daughter-in-love.

Hugging you tight til your return.

In the midst of winter,
I found there lives within me..
An invincible summer.

I could read poetry like this all, and every day...

Wonderful, how it flows in and out of the theme...
Ahhh! free verse, how when it is done well,
takes a hold on my soul....

Thank you, Martie

Martie,

Such a lovely portrait you've painted of your mother-in-love.  I'm sure you have been a blessing to her and will continue to be one.

A trip completed, and a trip of another kind begun.....now it's time for two beautiful poems to come to the top of the list, and tell us of the one who was at the center of each. Welcome home, Martie. It's good to have you back.

Martie, these were exceptional...you are both blessed in each other...I wish all daughter-in-laws were mature as yourself, to understand and respect their mother-in-laws as you do...there is great love and understanding in your heart...also, a tremendous insight...I've missed you...your writes, your soul fingers leading us....thank you sweet girl for these words.

Tremendous!

Yes, Martie has left for the memorial.  Taylor, who has undergone so much in these last few months, know what it is to have a loss of this magnitude, like so many of us do.  For those of you who have not yet read this chapter in your life...

call those parents in love.

Call them now.
