Listening to every heart

VanGuard Time

You asked why, and I have deliberated quietly
these last/first months
of winter, when one year slips/slides
into vanguard time, and understand now why

I seek snow…tranquilly shy, then blowing,
beignet soft, then deep, raging,
melting, crystallizing snow…see it hang
over particles of time, keeping itself reclused
toward geographic impossibles ~
ignoring probables of this world, [where
weathermen wonder] how marvelous, these forms of
chrysalis, making their own melting ways…

for I need this essential keeping,
life quiescent, this now winter,
its reality, not begging buds too early come,
nor teasing coats off, or on, or off again,
but keeping all bundled into a sanctum
of balm…so anticipation builds, until
we come to know the craving to see skin, again…

I care not now [but nudge me in 20 years]
to see warmer climes of where I grew
where green was always; and
do not ask me to ride undulating waves
when I can view drifts, building, masking, marking
moments of hearty hardiness, and mark inward turns,
when claiming time as master…still, knowing wind
is ocean sound in blanc drift…and one can drown
in white cool silk…

Some do not recover under winter’s harsh,
be it bush, tree, bird, squirrel, fox, hawk,
or the hungry…nature’s cleansing…clearing earth
of impurities, the weak, or ill…this, I know…

But, your question, my response, yes, I seek snow…
for its enervate, its cleanliness, its chilling blue,
if only to see,
would I survive
its chrysalis.

Fagin has it right.  This is gorgeous and the photos show "another" of your gifts.

And you meet the challenge... renewed. *S* Beautiful presentation!

Ah yes, snow - 'tis lovely true - when fresh and clean and virgin - and in the mountains!

The Smithsonian just recently found some glass negatives taken at the turn of the century of individual snow flake crystals - they are simply exquisite when viewed this way -

Your words are exquisite as well -

Hugs - Susan
