Love Stretches Us (Edited Repost from Last December) |

Memories are funny things Like ages shown in growth rings 'Round the tree of profound truth They circle us, encapsulate youth. Tonight I ponder growing things, Living, breathing, hurting things. Somewhere within the deep tree rings, I also remember Decembering... When making taffy was great fun, Pulling here and pressing thumbs, The more we pulled, the tougher the share; Then sweet chewy candy everywhere Waiting for the next morning to reach its ultimate goal. Tonight that memory lends new meaning To hardships of today. Pulled and stretched, then cut and cooled, hardened in that way, Love stretches us, it makes us grow, can chew us up for evermore. Oh Love, great love, soul’s taffy pull! Stretching us until we’re whole Or ‘til we break apart at last, stretching us to a point of grace Pleasing its appetite with the flavor. |

Jo, I had missed reading your thoughts. It's so nice to have them in written form to ponder them without distractions. This was a very nice surprise! Yes, stretched like taffy at Grandma's. But, oh, wasn't it sweet! Perhaps you can include the recipe? I don't remember how to make it, just the pulling and teasing! Talk to you soon... love, cathy |

lily jo, I so enjoyed ~ and understood, your words. A very interesting comparison you have made here. Quite appropriate and identifiable. As a teenager, I used to make my own brand of taffy. Actually, I tapped the maple trees in the woods behind my northern Ontario home and then I'd boil the sap in a big, black pot ( a cauldron! lol) over a fire that I would build all by myself. When the clear sap turned golden and thickened, I would pour it over the snow. As it cooled I would stretch and pull it. Then I place it on trays lined with wax paper and put it in the fridge. MMM! Tasty treats! Thanks for stirring up some pleasant memories of my own! Love you, lily jo! Linda |
