Of Things That Float

Is it only a matter of displacement and mass, gravity the common enemy?
Gravity
is also an
uncommon
friend,
to whom
we owe
a life
and life,
and there’s more to the thought. Visualize balloons, then picture an astronaut.
They
float,
those
luxuriant
balloons,
gently
rising
falling;
the spaceman doing neither, but he’s so high and his rocket has moved him into
orbits
of his
own,
so high
the very
word
turns
silly.
But he’s floating, isn’t he, and I who skim the surface long to dive, recline on sand,
gaze
up at
these
beauties,
rather
than
peering
down, eyes trapped in space. Having sunk, Would I, could I float? How far, deep,
and to
what end?
Never
naked
in air
perhaps,
but my
spirit
glides, surfs waves I only partially imagine, and would wholly experience, though
I drown

Jamie

"but my

To what length would a spirit go to do what it dreams, to dive from a cliff perhaps....so far above the sea to experience flying, even though the end could be to drown?  And what then?  A thoughtfilled poem, my friend.

Interesting read, thought provoking.  Have you ever been scuba diving?  Neutral buoyancy-- as if floating in mid water.  Way cool.

Very interesting read, Jamie.

I had occasion to get some swimming in a week ago when on vacation [almost two weeks ago by now...]

Anyway, I was able to enjoy the pool all to myself on two occasions, and just...floated.

This poem reminded me of my taking a deep breath, and rising...and slowing releasing it, and feeling my body fall back a wee bit into the water.

Much different when, as a child, all twiggy arms and not much bouyancy...so I felt the difference of age, and felt the burdenous weight of my daily life rise from me, knowing that even with age, even with weighty, ponderous decisions of life and nature...

some things still float.

I enjoyed this very, very much.  Your presentation was perfect.

this was stimulating and takes the reader to a place of your descriptions...like Marty said, "What Then" but then, who cares?  The matter is to me, peace and harmony and while your floating, simply take along a snorkle, and all will be well.....smiles and hugs, and invigorating write.  Thank you

Your words took me on such a mental adventure... I started out laughing with thoughts of some of those very personal effects of gravity... but such fluff was rapidly displaced by the heights and depths you wrote...

No heights exceed the levels to which your work soars... and the thought that such a spirit should sink at all is to define sadness.

An incredible write to ponder again and again!! *S*
