The Horse Holder

Fort Bliss tried to accommodate
its Marine contingent of students.
But Texas is a long way from the recruit depot
at San Diego. And a base
from which the U.S. Cavalry once chased
Pancho Villa, well, the desert, at best
is inhospitable to anything amphibious.
We sat in rooms once used by horses,
and took our breaks in vast spaces
between the former stables. If I closed my eyes
I could almost see Black Jack Pershing
galloping. Mostly, I missed the beaches
and the safe distance kept by college women.
Juarez was different.

And Fort Bliss, as a name
for such an establishment,
seems contradictory at best.

Welcome home, Robert...

Sunshine ..... Thank you. You are always there with the 'welcome - homecome'. Do you get paid for that? Laughing. Bob

Martie ..... Thank you, and, it was! That's why my buddies left me outside saying, "Here kid, you stay outside and hold the horses." Bob

I remember Juarez, Fort Bliss, that vast expanse of endlessly stretching desert.
My ex was stationed at Fort Bliss, and I worked for Ma Bell, downtown El Paso. When he got his orders to Nam, we jumped in the VW and drove nearly non-stop to Santa Monica, ran across the warm sands and into the arms of the Pacific.
See what you did to my memory banks today?

Laughing at Ms Sunshine's reaction. Yep, Juarez....different.
I won't even mention some of the tales of Juarez that circulated 'round the Bliss.
