Maddy I When I lived in St. Paul in the fall of ’70 in a house with three girls I worked with in the Mac cafeteria they called me “cowboy”. Sometimes we smoked a little and made candles by mixing different colored wax then poured it into molds made from snow letting the boiling wax work its random way through the cold until it set. We took the candles to a place called the West Bank and sold them or traded for stuff or just gave them away. One time Madeline pressed my fist into the snow poured red and yellow wax in the hollow and the candle that came out looked just like a human heart. Christ Maddy, I loved you. After all this time you’re still in there and the memory is a pure form of nourishment. II Do you remember how we met? When you asked what I did for orientation I replied: “Anything” which started us both laughing and broke the ice. I had no mailbox so you let me use yours. We went to “The Spoon” and drank coffee smoked Camels and talked about nothing and everything, held hands and watched a Star Trek rerun in the dorm lounge, stood in the stairwell kissing for eons, then ran breathless through the cold to your house and warmed ourselves in an ancient and beautiful way. III The night we went to the Guthrie and saw the Youngbloods you sat reading the program and asked: “Jesse Colin Young went to Andover you know. Was he there when you were?” “Uh, I didn’t know, I guess he wasn’t there,” I said. “When I was, I mean,” smiling through the colors. Brownies kept going by in paper sacks but we didn’t try them. As the theater darkened and the show got underway the windowpane was crystalline and clean the stage became a holy apparition and their music drew the colors into words. “Some will come and some will go We will surely pass When the one that left us here Returns for us at last We are but a moment’s sunlight Fading in the grass Come on people now Smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another Right now" |

Thank you kindly for reading, Maree. I was only 18 then, and like all kids of that era, felt we could change the world, little did we know it would do so much to change us. Billy 8) |

Thank You for the kind reply, Enchantress. She dumped me for a jock about Thanksgiving time, I came home for Christmas break and didn't return, so I never saw her again. But: "The heart knows not the march of time." coyote 8) |

I so enjoyed this...thank you for sharing...you painted a piece of history I know little about - a taste of my parents time, in vivid color. |

Dear Coyote, I've been posting here at PIP for over a year...and suggested my girlfriend come to the site and read some of the marvelous poets here...she did, and happened across this poem...wrote me and said she was...in her own words, Thunderstruck, so, not only am I sending this back to the top, but also am going to post her commentary on your work, this trememdous poem....she said... Today I was deleting some of the bookmarked files I have, and reread the poem, for perhaps the 20th time, and still felt the same emotions upon reading it the first time. Just loved the simple honest raw emotions expressed from a time long ago. and so, coyote, if you still pop in and out of PIP from time to time, thought you would enjoy knowing this. Now, I'm going to make it a point to read more of you...hugs...and thank you...Lee J. |
