Where no tyranny is tolerable

It is afternoon.
And I have just completed
A transaction at the bank.
The teller then hands me
What feels like
A laminated plastic card
And she says I am getting a cigar.
I think:
It must be some promotion …
That the card is probably redeemable
Somewhere for a cigar.
As I am pondering this,
She  hands me a cigar.
It is a large, oval object,
Soft, heavy and warm,
All padded and bundled up,
Feeling like a loaf of fresh-baked bread.
There is something numinous about the package,
As though it holds
Something special or significant.
The package exudes a fantastic aroma,
A scent of fine cigars.
I suppose the cigar
Must be coiled up inside the cloth,
Coils within coils within coils,
That I can feel inside the cloth.
But I don’t smoke.
I’ll just take it home and roll it out,
Light it in an ashtray,
And let the fragrance fumigate the house.
How funny it would be
If people who come to visit actually thought
That I smoked fine cigars!
I think:
Wow, the social benefits of smoking
Without having to actually smoke! …
It reminds me
Of those little candy cigarettes
That children play with,
To pretend that they are smoking,
Just like big people …

Smiling here - I remember those candy cigarettes.  Enjoyed this.
