With an ear pressed to the ground,
listening to Mother’s heartbeat,
a surrealistic sound did surround;
I heard a sigh followed by a cry.

Though muffled,
‘twas unmistakably
the sound of pain.

I backed away, startled,
yet Her voice was crystal clear.
The gravity of the moment
grounded me,
and the air was charged with fear.

"You must give me back my forests"
She cried,
"and my pristine waters, too.
For that’s the only way you’ll survive.
It’s God’s truth, from me to you."

So I gathered up what courage I had,
and climbed a nearby mountain top,
then shouted above the trees and clouds,
"This destruction has to stop!"

When the echo came back
from the canyon wall
my heart sank,
and on my knees I did fall.

For no one was listening,
save those stone walls.
