The Gismo

She wore it
a badge of honor

Holding          straight
the S shaped curve of her back
enduring its pain for her pleasure

Upright    through the portals
her life span    she marched
taking it off and on like she opened and closed doors of humor
you can see in the name she gave it
although it steadied the pain     she could still poke it with her fun
they were allies    you see

Now she has abandoned it and its quirks
no longer does it mark the hours of her life
she has admitted time’s steady march
and no longer fumbles its complicated pull

Shlip shlip the drum of slippers shuffle
The sound she makes in partner with her walker now
I hear it still …..punctuating my night dreams
Shlip shlip is real

The gismo hides within the drawer of endings
no longer cleaving to the needs of this journey

She whispers lips of reed instruments
clear and fragile song
her wrists percussion testiment
still beating strong

I know this woman, only not by your mother in love's name, but by my own mother in love's name...

I wish yours, peace.  I wish the same for my own.

And it's good to have you home, Sissie...

And I know this woman by my own mother-in-love's name.
You have been missed dear lady.
Hugs and welcome home.

Welcome back, Martie.  "Mother in love" - how lovely and when we witness such courage we can only be humbled.  Your poem has made me a witness.  My best to you and yours.

Think too many of us forget how the ladies that shuffle along today once helped us to read and write, protected us from the elements, nursed, fed and comforted us when in difficulty...all for free basically...enjoyed the read

Martie,
And gracefully done too. A lovely tribute done so tender and respectfully. Thank you.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

This is indeed a loving tribute, Martie.  How insightful of you to find such beauty in dignity in her life.  Ken

Martie, so good to see you home, with your artistic mind in pen and in as usual, rare form...this was elegant and most appreciative...tremendous write...hope all is well, I've missed you.

Respect is a wonderful thing, and it can be hard to find -- whether we're giving or receiving.

You seem to find beauty in all things, Martie, so much so that you make me want to find it too.

What a loving portrait... she's obviously a remarkable woman. *S*

You bring her courage and love and light it up in your own graceful way.

Martie - you touch the fabric of love with this poem - love and insights not so many of us have - thanks for showing us what we by ourselves don't often see - Paul
