               Crossing Gate

The gate doesn’t know
               a train is coming:
up track somewhere
               a metal synapse
               closes
and the bell starts,
drowned by traffic,
               bored
               with the job of ringing
               at sound insulated cars,
then the blackwhite board
               wobbles down
with the verve of a rubber stamp
               at the DMV.

Maybe it saved my life,
               but still
               there’s nothing heroic
               about a gate.
On the other hand,
                the train is
                way up there;
                I could cross
before--

No! don't even try!  Oops-too late.  See what happens?  I like the way you ended this one.

hm...I know a mother who lost two children in doing that... not a pretty picture!

I like how this leaves one on edge wondering...  It's something that most drivers daringly wonder!  Enjoyed.

When it comes to capturing a moment we all recognize... but doing so in such a way that we see nuances we never imagined... you have no equal... or even peer. *S*

As I read this, I thought of those life-changing moments that slip up on us... when our futures are literally defined by the briefest answer... or... depending on the answer we give... we never even know a choice was even there. *S*

This is superb, my friend... yes. *S*
