Summer Preserves...Nightshade sent me word-sailing

Summer Preserves

I think I need to put summer into a pickle
like in days gone by
when I could sigh
mid winter
as I bit into a pickle
vinegary and tart
crisp with alum
color-enhanced with turmeric
garlicky and spiced
just enough for it to bite me back
tingle the olfactory senses
and the tongue

but I was young
and I wasn’t the only pickle pusher
back then
or would that be a pickle pincher

now
I grab a jar from the super market shelf
having no idea whose summer
was blessed by the labors
and the love
if love entered into the packing
at all

ah, but surely,
with a name like Vlasic
there must be love in there

not just a Heinz
with so many varieties
sending any semblance of love
every which way

yeah
I need to pickle summer again
so I can taste it when it rains

And that rain will be some time soon I'm sure. And a very interesting read.

Otherwise, maybe preserve it in jam along with the strawberries. Sounds good to me. And a great memory.
